Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mark Gangloff was named volunteer assistant coach for the Auburn swimming and diving teams, head coach Brett Hawke announced Wednesday.

“We’re really excited to have Mark join the staff,” Hawke said. “He has been a huge influence here at Auburn, both as a Tiger and as an international swimmer. He is one of the best breaststrokers in the world and we are very fortunate to have him join us.”

Gangloff is no stranger to success, having become one of the country’s elite breaststrokers.  He comes to Auburn after spending time with the SwimMAC Carolina club team in Charlotte, N.C.

On the Olympic stage, Gangloff won gold in both the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics as a part of the United States 400m medley relay teams. Other international accolades include winning bronze in the 50m breaststroke and gold as a part of the 400m medley relay at the 2009 World Championships.

In prior world meets, Gangloff won silver in both the 50m breast and 400m medley relay at the 2008 World Championships. At the 2005 World Championships, he came away with a gold in the 400m medley relay and silver in the 50m breast.

Gangloff currently holds the American record in the 50m breast, recording a time of 26.86. He also is the 2009 USA Swimming champion in the 100m breast.

While at Auburn, Gangloff was a 12-time All-American, swimming in the breaststroke events, the 200 IM and both medley relays. In 2004, he was a part of the NCAA champion 200 medley relay squad, as well as being a part of the 2003 and 2004 national championship teams.

In his senior year, Gangloff won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and swam the second leg for both the 200 and 400 champion medley relay squads at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships.

A native of Stow, Ohio, Gangloff earned his degree in criminology from Auburn in 2005. He is married to the former Ashley Rubenstein, who dove at Auburn and participated in the 2005 World University Games.

Mark will be in Raleigh and Charlotte with the Fitter & Faster Tour on September 12-13, with fellow swimmers Lacey Nymeyer and Nick Thoman. On September 19-20, he will be in Atlanta, GA with Peter Vanderkaay and Christine Magnuson. Make sure you dont miss the opportunity to swim with Mark and our other Swim Champions.
