Will Copeland was born with a condition know as Pectus Excavatum, a defect that pulled his breastbone inward and put pressure on his heart while restricting lung capacity. While not life-threatening, it could be debilitating for an elite athlete, so Copeland underwent a surgical procedure to allow him to better compete.

He immediately saw increased success in the pool, winning four Pac-10 Championships and being named an NCAA All-American during his senior campaign.

In 2008, he won his first national championship in the 100 Free at the Conoco Phillips Short Course National Championships in Atlanta, Ga.

While he has graduated from Cal, Will currently still lives in Berkeley where he continues to train under Cal Head Coach Dave Durden.
